We’ve always known there have been idiots on the internet. But the vomit spewed on a daily basis is getting unbearable. From the girl that went viral for licking a toilet seat, to influencers and vloggers desperate for fame, to just horrendous Twitter takes on society and pop culture, we need a stricter quality control system in place to prevent people from spewing mindless garbage out to the masses. See, we’ve lost the ability to critically think in this country. People take things way too literally at face value, and as a result, people are too dumb to conflate jokes and sarcasm for actual truth.
We just need a “big red X” or something on people’s accounts to let people know, “hey, please don’t take this idiot seriously.” Before the internet, you actually had to have some sort of credibility to get your ideas publicized and venerated through the masses. Now, all you need is a keyboard. And that makes everyone’s stupid opinion just as valid as the next guy’s (which isn’t a good thing).
Wouldn’t it be great if there was an easier way to spot who’s an idiot and who’s actually smart and reputable on the internet? Easy solution- make everyone take an IQ test and you must to get above a certain score to get internet “posting privileges.”
It’s like a breathalyzer for the internet. You wouldn’t want your blacked out friend to get behind the wheel of a car, why should any idiot with a keyboard be allowed to post on the internet? I would actually argue that dumb tweets are far worse for society than drunk driving. So, by default, one should have to take an IQ test to measure reasonable intelligence before being allowed to post on the internet. When the internet was created, nobody envisioned that literally any idiot on earth would have the unwavering ability to broadcast any raw thought at anytime out to the masses. Well, unfortunately that day has come and we need to do some serious quality control, fast. Limiting the posting ability of the internet to only intelligent people would seriously help society parse through what’s legit and what should’ve been left in the drafts.
In my perfect world, dumb people can still have access to the internet to read and learn, but they would NOT be able to post until they can prove they’re smart enough to interact online. Plus, it might encourage all the dumb people to read and educate themselves in order to get “posting privileges.”
For reference, IQ tests do a generally good job of evaluating someone’s overall intelligence. According to verywellhealth.com, “An IQ test is an assessment that measures a range of cognitive abilities and provides a score that is intended to serve as a measure of an individual’s intellectual abilities and potential. IQ tests are among the most commonly administered psychological tests.”
Scores can range anywhere from 0 to infinite and you have to score in the 98th percentile or higher in order to qualify for Mensa, the world’s “High IQ Society.”
According to the chart, an Average IQ is scoring anywhere from 90 to 109. I propose you need to have to have an IQ of at least 115 to be able to post content online. Whether it be a tweet, an article, a TikTok, you gotta be smart to play this game.
And I know what you’re thinking… bro, that’s too harsh. You can’t just ban dumb people from the internet. And yeah, while I know that’s what my ideal world would be, it’s unfortunately not practical. Plus, I mean we all know most of Twitter gold comes from certified idiots. But all I’m saying is that we should have a way to easier identify the idiots from the intelligents. How about this? A checkmark system for intelligence level of users. Every social media platform can implement it. You get a green checkmark next to your handle if you scored above 115 IQ and a big red X next to your name if you scored below it. That way everyone can know how stupid you are or how seriously to take you.
I took a free IQ test online for this article and got 130 (I had already been a couple of beers deep and if I can do it, most people can) so I don’t feel like I’m being super exclusionary. But fuck it, if an IQ test is too “elitist”, then people should at the very least have to pass one of those standardized tests we took as fifth graders. Literally, if you can’t pass a test designed to measure the aptitude of eleven year olds, you SHOULD NOT be allowed to use the internet.
