20 years ago today one of the greatest gaming consoles of all time launched and sparked a generation of gamers across the nation. Much like Pepsi and Coke, gaming has long been an even divide between Playstation and Xbox users, each group loyal to the grave. As an Xbox loyalist myself I can attest that I’ve had every console they’ve launched since first buying the OG Xbox.
With only 3 consoles being released by the franchise since it’s conception, it’s been easy and affordable to stay on top of the latest gaming trends. So how do each of the 3 Xbox consoles compare? As Xbox celebrates its 20th anniversary, here’s how I rank each Xbox era.
1st: Original Xbox Console – There’s something about turning on that OG power button that brings an unmatched level of childhood nostalgia. Long nights playing Halo multiplayer with friends while slamming Mountain Dews are some of the best memories of my childhood and countless others. Every game seemed to be wildly entertaining in this era, unlike a lot of games in the modern era. OG is a title earned, not given, and it’s easy to see the original Xbox console has earned its keep at the top of this list.
2nd: Xbox One – Honestly the Xbox One could’ve just as easily made the top of this list, as well. Where do I begin? The COD franchise, Fortnite in its glory days, the countless gorgeous games released with this high level processing console. Xbox One helped catapult console gaming into its modern, artistic era and with that it’s easily a close 2nd on the Xbox console list.
3rd: Xbox 360 – Third place only exists on this list because there can’t be any ties here. The Xbox 360 console is one of the best consoles of all time in general, but when it comes to the Xbox franchise itself it’s definitely the third best. Don’t get me wrong, the Xbox 360 had some amazing games. This console really was the one to catapult millions of gamers into the Xbox Live era.
For me personally it was my first console experience where I could game with my friends online rather than having to go over to someone’s house to play games. For that the Xbox 360 is one of the greatest consoles ever, but compared to the OG Xbox’s nostalgia levels and the Xbox One’s innovation it definitely ranks solidly in 3rd on my list.
Honorable mention: Xbox Series X. It’s just the Xbox One with a different shape. Let’s be honest.
