Things I can spend $14 on besides ONE BEER at Banc of California Stadium

the offender in question

A while back, I went to the relatively new Banc of California Stadium to watch my beloved NYCFC take on LAFC in a Sunday afternoon game of fútbol. The weather was great, the fans were kind, it was my first live sporting event since the lockdown. Things were shaping up for a wonderful afternoon. Until I hit the concession stand and realized I was stuck in the middle of a mafia-style SHAKEDOWN for a $14 beer!!! (A Dos Equis, nonetheless). Are you kidding me?!?! $14?!?! I could go to the liquor store across the street on Figueroa and spend less for SIX of those!!!

I knew stadium beers were bad, but they’ve never been this bad.

A few weeks later, I went to an afternoon game at Angels Stadium and again, had to put a mortgage on an afternoon baseball beer (a can of beer, because with my credit, I’d never get approved for a loan to buy a 32oz draft).

The last straw was a week ago. I went to take in a lovely Dodgers game and again, wanted to indulge in a delightful domestic beer while taking in an evening of America’s pastime. I was SHOCKED to check out at the register and see I was being charged $15 for a friggin beer. $15?!?! And it’s not like I got some triple brewed, hipster craft IPA. I got a tallboy of Michelob Ultra for God’s sake (save the disparaging comments for another time, it wouldn’t have been my beer of choice, either).

I’m calling out the ridiculous SHAKEDOWN that is these exorbitant prices of beers at stadiums. Here’s a list of a few things that I could actually spend $14 on instead of one of these overpriced, shakedown stadium beers.

FOUR STICKS of my usual Old Spice deodorant – that’ll keep me fresh for a quarter of a year! ($2.97 per stick)

THREE, WHOLE delicious, juicy rotisserie chickens from Costco ($4.99 a piece)

Literally a MONTH’S worth of Coffee from Trader Joe’s ($14 / 28oz)

This 32inch Samsung TV from Facebook Marketplace ($14.99)

(Get it quick, looks like a hot commodity, https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/4193781927370748/)

According to GoBankingRates.com, the cheapest stadium beers can be found at Camden Yards in Baltimore, and the two Atlanta stadiums; with the Braves, Falcons and Orioles all serving up $5 stadium brews.

Screw stadium beers. And I know, while there’s nothing better than sitting back and watching a great game with a cold brew- do yourself (and your wallet) a favor and keep the drinks to before and after the game. Any beer over $7 is not a friend of mine.
