Today Cleveland Cavaliers starter, JR Smith, officially teed off his career as a college golfer. No, I am not making this up. He’s actually playing in a collegiate tournament representing North Carolina A&T golf after qualifying for the Phoenix Invitational by one stroke.
Honestly at first I thought this was the typical celebrity red carpet treatment where he was sort of just buying his way into the program and tournaments with status, but I’ll give it to him. JR’s got a pretty nice swing. I mean I’m sure blowing a fraction of your NBA contract payout on daily golf lessons and ridiculously expensive clubs would help anyone shave a few strokes off their game, but it looks like Mr. Smith might have actually earned his way into this week’s tourney after all.
Even after qualifying for his first official tournament, JR’s got a long way to go. It’s not easy staying consistent in a competitive setting when it comes to golf. JR might have a nice swing, but the rest of his game needs to stay up this week for him to even have a chance at cracking the top 10 of the Phoenix Open’s field. Will JR Smith be the Michael Jordan of golf, a two sport pro athlete? Let’s just see how this week goes before we get too ahead of ourselves.
