A24, the artsy film house behind movies like Uncut Gems, Hereditary, and Moonlight, has just released a teaser for The Tragedy of Macbeth. While the trailer is only about a minute long, there are several things to note. First and foremost, we see legendary actor Denzel Washington playing the titular Shakespearean character. Secondly, all of the footage is in black and white, which is all too typical of an “indie” film studio like A24. I mean it worked for The Lighthouse, so why not try it again? Regardless of cinematography decisions, this announcement has film enthusiasts across the globe hyped.
Truth be told, I’m not the biggest Shakespeare fan. Reading Romeo and Juliet in high school was a total snore-fest, and the only reason I can remember the plot to Hamlet is because The Lion King did such a great job of adapting it. I get that William Shakespeare is considered a literary giant and he invented a bunch of words in the English language, but I personally just don’t enjoy reading the stuff. While they may have been groundbreaking during his time, Shakespeare’s writings don’t necessarily flow off the tongue compared to modern literature. But I digress. The Tragedy of Macbeth is one of the best-known plays of all time, and if Denzel is about to do all the heavy lifting, I’m more than willing to give it a shot.
For now, all we know about the upcoming film comes from its short teaser trailer. By revealing so little, it seems like A24 doesn’t want to give anything away in regards to character performances. I guess we’ll just have to see if the hype is worth it when The Tragedy of Macbeth hits theaters this Christmas.
