Call of Duty Vanguard Review

Last night I decided to go against every instinct and game reviewer in my body and purchased the newly released Call of Duty Vanguard. After hearing all of the apparent issues with lazy animations, slow loading speeds and the presence of red dot sights in a World War II video game my expectations were low right out of the gate. But honestly, Vanguard’s fairly decent.

Full disclosure I haven’t played any of the campaign yet, mostly because only 8 year old kids who aren’t allowed to play online yet purchase the game purely to play the campaign and zombies. That being said the first thing I jumped on was multiplayer. Now the COD franchise has been notorious for creating disappointing multiplayer maps for the last at least 2-3 legs of the series, but the initial batch of maps are honestly pretty good. They’re spacious, have solid layouts and aren’t easy to spawn flip as has been an issue in the past with short length maps.

Now that being said, I am a purist when it comes to historical accuracy in WWII games so when I saw every gun has a red dot sight I was not too thrilled. Red dots were not developed until over a decade after WWII ended, but given the fact that the game has 50% female characters they obviously are not worried about historical accuracy.

Onto the zombies, I was honestly very confused with what exactly is your goal with the game mode. In the older zombies versions it was extremely straight forward. Buy a gun, pack-a-punch it and do what you can to stay alive as long as possible. But in this new version the game allows you to be extracted and end your attempt willingly. Why? I don’t know, honestly. Maybe they wanted to spice things up and make it more geared towards side tasks and missions inside the zombies world (which it is), but I’m still on the fence on whether I like this newly structured zombies setup or not.

Overall after playing for a solid 24 hours I’d give the newest leg of COD a 7/10. It’s fun, has solid multiplayer maps and will give you something else to play besides Modern Warfare. Plus we have the new Vanguard Warzone map to look forward to coming out December 2nd. Apparently those who buy Vanguard will have access to the new map a day early so go buy Vanguard and try this new COD out for yourself, ya filthy animals.
